Abraham Maslow's concept of self-actualization is in direct harmony with each of the basic Qualities outlined in the Inner Counselor's Integration Chart. As an example, the above diagram addresses the need for the basic quality of Freedom. "Fight" and "Flight" are often appropriate responses to threat or danger. However, such responses limit our options when they become habitual and "automatic". The bottom horizontal arrow indicates the lateral movement that occurs when we operate from a "deficiency" motivation seeking freedom by running from conditions in our lives or fighting against those conditions. We may run away from (flight) or rebel against (fight) restraints. This lateral movement will momentarily alter our experience (new places, different people, new relationships) but it seldom alters who we are at deeper levels of self-actualization and growth. Ultimate freedom is an intrinsic quality. The central arrow indicates a vertical movement towards intrinsic self-actualizing values and qualities. Freedom towards what Maslow describes as "Being values" will move us in an ever upward spiral towards higher levels of integrity, synergy, right relationship, trust, and peace.
