| The Integration Chart:
In the Integration Chart, a white section of "choice" runs horizantally across the center of the chart. Sections above that center are designated as updrafts and sections below are designated as downdrafts. Each of the columns, numbered one through six, has an upper section and a lower section. In the upper sections are listed the instrinsic qualities that allow us to function optimally. The lower sections represent how we tend to feel and react when our need for the qualities in the upper section have not been met or realized. When we act using the coping patterns listed in the lower sections of the columns, we act from what psychologist Abraham Maslow described as "deficiency motivation". The lower sections might also be called the "shadow side" of the personality. Although we aspire to the qualities in the upper sections, we are automatically drawn into the "shadow" expressions by unmet needs. Using the Chart with the Inner Counselor Process - an example of Perfectionism (Column 3 -#6, downdraft): The Inner Counselor Process uses a 15-Step guided imagery exercise to help the person re-experience the feelings around the need for perfectionism. The related feelings (emotions + sensations) carry the person to an earlier originating incident where the coping pattern was established. In a visualization, the symbolically represented old pattern is absorbed and included within a new symbolic pattern that is evoked from the person's higher wisdom. The new symbol Transforms the old symbol and this alchemical process allows the person to completely Transcend the old behavior. Afterwards, instead of being automatically drawn into the old coping pattern, the person can choose the degree of "perfection" to apply to any given situation. The Flow Chart (at the top): The Flow-Chart moves horizantally and suggests that we are on a creative journey towards Self-actualization (Abraham Maslow). As we become more Self-actualized and begin to consciously create the "reality" of who we are, the potential for choice and Self-realization are increasingly made available to us. Self-realization brings us into balance where we have true choices. Few of us can call ourselves "Enlightened", but we may have moments when we merge within a universal state of joy and oneness. Each time we process the emotions related to an issue, a coping pattern, or a traumatic event we engage in the self-empowering journey across the Flow Chart. As more and more aspects of ourselves undergo this process, we find ourselves living our lives at higher levels of response where optimal choices are an ever-present option. |
